Lady Mary Crawley was left devastated when her husband Matthew was killed in a car crash during the Christmas special.

Now in the just-released trailer for Downton Abbey’s highly-anticipated fourth season, Mary (Michelle Dockery) is now a mourning single mother.

Returning to the series four in the 2013 Christmas episode will be Shirley MacLaine, who will reprise her role as Cora’s mother, Martha Levinson, and Paul Giamatti has been cast as her son and Lady Grantham’s brother, Harold. The show’s first black character will be introduced: a jazz musician and singer from Chicago named Jack Ross. Ross, who will ignite some race-related controversy, will be portrayed by Gary Carr.

UK: Downton Abbey Season 4 will premiere, 22nd September on ITV.
USA: Downton Abbey Season 4 will Begin on PBS on Sunday, January 5, 2014
