Alan Rickman, Harry Potter & Die Hard Actor, Dies Aged 69 From Cancer

Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman better knowns as Alan Rickman, an actor known for films including Harry Potter, Die Hard and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, has died at the age of 69.

Announcing his death on Thursday, a family statement said: “The actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends.”

Mr Rickman’s first major television role came in 1982, with the TV movie Busted, but his big break was his role as the Vicomte de Valmont in the stage production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses in 1985, for which he was nominated for a Tony Award. He gained wider notice for his film performances as Hans Gruber in Die Hard and as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter film series.

Mr Rickman’s other film roles included the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Jamie in Truly, Madly, Deeply, Colonel Brandon in Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility, Harry in Love Actually, P.L. O’Hara in An Awfully Big Adventure, Alexander Dane in Galaxy Quest, and Judge Turpin in the film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s musical of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

In 1995, Mr Rickman was awarded a Golden Globe Award, an Emmy Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award for his portrayal of Rasputin in Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny. He won a BAFTA Award for his role in Robin Hood.

Mr Rickman leaves behind his wife of 3 years Rima Horton. They met in 1965 when he was 19 and she was 18, they lived together from 1977 until his death.
